Dr. Charles Hedbring is a Swedish-American who also
enjoys permanent residency status in Australia. Dr Hedbring
is the director of Program STEPPE, a remedial and
special education computer consulting firm. Its primary
purpose is to assist parents, clinicians, administrators,
and practitioners apply appropriate computer technology to
the learning needs of four specific groups of special
learners: Mentally learning handicapped individuals;
immigrants and others devoted to learning English as a
second language; the elderly; and young 'normally
developing' children, ages three through
six. He has published several papers regarding his work, has
created more than a dozen software programs, has completed a
book-length manuscript, and continues to engage in a variety
of activities relevant to the learning handicapped, the
elderly, and English-language training.
Dr. Hedbring earned his doctorate at Columbia University in
the early
1980s.
His federally funded research led to the subsequent
development of
specialized instructional software
(FACTS+) for the learning
handicapped
-- autistic,
dyslexic, developmentally delayed, LD, mentally retarded,
language
delayed,
and attention
deficit
disordered students. Subsequently, FACTS+ underwent
revision
in
order to meet the
learning needs of two other groups noted above -- the elderly and
individuals learning English
as a second language. By 1990 his publications
and
software development
efforts had
won FACTS+ a major national award in America for
'software
excellence'. (Click here for large graphic summary of the FACTS+ Curriculum.)
Dr. Hedbring was a computer teacher of learning handicapped
students and a computer coordinator with the New York City
Board of Education for more than a decade. He has presented
at dozens of conferences and conventions and was invited
to conduct two lecture tours of Australia and one in New
Zealand.
